Infrastructure

Recognizing the vital role of fisheries economy and food security, the Government is making substantial investments in infrastructure development. This comprehensive initiative encompasses upgrading Fish Landing Points to Fish Landing Centres, further elevating these into Fishing Harbours, establishing new fish farms and office buildings, and modernizing or renovating existing facilities. Harbours and landing centres are pivotal, offering safe berthing and landing for boats, essential repair and maintenance infrastructure, and serving as central hubs for crucial activities like fish auctions and their subsequent distribution to wholesale, retail, and processing markets. They also foster collaboration among stakeholders for effective fisheries resource management. These infrastructure initiatives are strategically designed to enhance fishermen safety, improve fish quality and hygiene to meet stringent export standards, expand market access for better prices, and stimulate job creation, thereby contributing significantly to local economic development.

An artificial reef is a human-made underwater structure that is intentionally placed on the seabed to mimic the characteristics of a natural reef. These structures are built to create new habitats, restore degraded marine ecosystems, and enhance biodiversity in areas that might otherwise be barren or lacking in suitable environments for marine life.

Reflecting this commitments, the Government have accorded administrative sanction for Rs. 1559.49 Crore over the past four years to bolster fisheries infrastructure across various districts of Tamil Nadu.
